When a wall has real work to do, like holding up a boundary, a split-level block or a pool surround, we usually reach for posts and panels. Galvanised steel posts go into concreted footings and precast concrete panels or sleepers drop in between them. The result is straight, strong and quick to build, and it takes a Colorbond fence on top cleanly.
Panel-and-post walls
Precast panels slot between the posts. They're fast to install, give a consistent finish and are cost-effective over long straight runs, which is why they're so common on the newer estates through Perth's north where whole boundaries need levelling at once. Most of the panel walls in our photos have a limestone-look face, so they sit comfortably next to traditional limestone.
Concrete sleeper walls
Galvanised steel H-posts with concrete sleepers stacked between them. Sharp edges and strength that scales: you can generally go higher with sleepers than with most block systems. They're our go-to for:
- Side and rear boundaries where the neighbour's yard sits higher or lower
- Split-level blocks and cut-and-fill sites
- Pool surrounds
- Any wall that's also going to carry a fence
Why galvanised steel posts
The posts carry the load, so they need to last in WA conditions. Galvanised steel resists corrosion and keeps its strength for the long haul, and where the design or height calls for it we add steel reinforcing as well. Where the height or the council requires engineering, we arrange it before the job is booked.
Built for Perth sand
Posts and panels are only as good as their footings. In loose sand we dig deeper than the wall looks like it needs, set every post in concrete to the right depth and line, and put drainage and clean backfill behind the panels so water can't build up. Backfill goes in and gets compacted in layers so the ground behind the wall doesn't keep settling.
Panels, sleepers or limestone?
Limestone suits gardens, front yards and character homes. Panels and sleepers suit boundaries, height and anything with a fence on top. Read our limestone vs panel-and-post comparison, or just book a measure and we'll tell you which one your block actually needs.
What's included
Free on-site measure, a fixed written price with a start date, excavation, removal of the old wall, spoil removal and the clean-up. If there's a fence going on top, we quote it as part of the same job.
Questions
How high can a panel or sleeper wall go?
Higher than most block walls, but the height drives the engineering. Many Perth councils want a building permit once a wall retains more than 500 mm, and taller walls usually need engineering. We work that out at the measure.
Can a Colorbond fence go on top?
Yes. Sleeper and panel walls take a Colorbond fence cleanly, and we build both as one job.
Are panel walls cheaper than limestone?
Over long straight runs they're usually cost-effective. Published Perth price guides overlap a lot between materials, so the measure is where you get the real number.
